It is now almost certain that a Federal Budget will be handed down as planned, on 25 March 2025. As to whether this is before or after the Government goes into care-taker mode depends on the timing of the election announcement. There seems to be common agreement that 17 May 2025 is the last date for an election, which means it will need to be called around 13 April, so there would seem to be little chance of any Budget related announcements becoming Law before Parliament is prorogued.
As is tradition, we expect that there would be a response by the Opposition to the Budget in their Budget reply speech. Again, the significance of any announcements here will be entirely dependent on the make up of the new Parliament.
On this basis, we anticipate that the urgency to understand the impact of any Budget announcement is not such that we need to drag our clients and friends out of bed on a brisk Autumn morning – so we are not holding our annual Budget Breakfast this year. We will return with vigour next Budget.
Perhaps this is recompense for the last 5 years, which has already seen more than its fair share of Budgets!
Of course, we will ensure that our team at Newton & Henry Pty Ltd, and our clients, are well informed in respect of both the Budget and any response, by way of publication of a Budget insight brief.
